Concerts & Productions

The programme’s professional orientation is put into practice through a number of yearly activities that are open to the general public. Internationally renowned conductors and directors are responsible for the artistic direction of these concerts and productions.

All students obtain roles in the performances produced by the IOA, which include at least one production with piano in the first year and one production with orchestra in the second year of the course. By organising concerts, recitals, public courses and a number of productions the IOA appeals to new, young target groups.

During their studies, students also collaborate in private concerts. These are arranged by individuals and organisations that provide financial support to IOA and/or students.

During the first year of the course, all students audition for our professional partners (Kunsthuis Opera Vlaanderen, La Monnaie/De Munt, Opera de Oviedo, Teatro Aalto (Essen, Germany), Festival of Flanders and others). Depending on the result of the audition, students may be offered a position as an intern in the following season.

There are different types of internships, including those in which the student actively participates in the production and sings in performances, those in which the student acts as a cover, and so-called observation placements in which the student is a passive participant in the production process.
