Piet De Volder
Piet De Volder studied musicology at UGent. He is dramaturge at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. As (musical) house dramaturge, he cooperated in OBV productions of Lulu (A. Berg) and the entire Der Ring des Nibelungen (R. Wagner), both productions by Ivo Van Hove; in Pelléas et Mélisande (C. Debussy), directed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet; in Der Schmied von Gent (F. Schreker) and Der Silbersee (K. Weill), both productions by Ersan Mondtag. He published about the contemporary Spanish composer Luis de Pablo (1930-2021) at Edizioni Suvini Zerboni (Milan) and Fundación Autor (Madrid). Together with prof. Francis Maes (UGent), De Volder published Opera: achter de schermen van de emotie (Opera: behind the scenes of emotion), a series of essays about opera critique and dramaturgy (2011).
During the ’22-’23 season, De Volder was musical dramaturge for the new production of Tristan und Isolde (R. Wagner) at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, directed by cineaste Philippe Grandieux, and for the Vonk productions Vake Poes; of hoe God verdween (Lisaboa Houbrechts) and Kruistocht (Crusade), by Johan De Smet. De Volder also works as a teacher of dramaturgy at the International Opera Academy (Ghent).
