Why a deontological code?

  • A deontological code is an ethical code that provides a framework within which one can act and think. The deontology provides guidance: how best to act in different situations. The code also provides protection for the International Opera Academy (further ‘IOA’) and its students, staff and external parties.
  • Clear rules provide clarity and uniformity.
  • The IOA counts on all those involved to act with integrity in the professional environment (both inside and outside the school environment). Managers and other staff members have an exemplary role in this.
  • The Deontological Code remains a ‘work in progress’. Every year, the code is reviewed and adjusted where necessary.

IOA values

The deontological framework is linked to the core values of the IOA. Students, staff and external parties are expected to accept and propagate these common IOA values and standards. This leads to an organisation with integrity where all parties treat each other correctly, equally and with quality. A person of integrity is honest and sincere and possesses intrinsic trustworthiness.
The IOA strives to create a caring learning/working environment. In that environment, the core values of safety and mutual respect prevail – allowing everyone to give their best in all areas.

All IOA values and standards:

  • Professionalism
  • Up-to-date policy
  • Quality
  • Discipline
  • Creativity
  • Safety
  • Mutual respect

Mutual respect

Internal operations can only run efficiently, smoothly and professionally if everyone strives to perform their own tasks as correctly as possible. This involves honesty and respect in dealing with others. In a caring learning/working environment, people respect each other’s boundaries. One does not do or say anything that someone else might consider a violation of one’s own dignity. What is acceptable to one person is not always acceptable to another. We always show understanding for this.

The IOA wants to be an example in terms of creating equal opportunities. No distinction is made between people based on individual diversity.

Ethics

People always act with respect towards the reputation of the IOA. Everyone treats the people and resources of the IOA ethically and responsibly. One does not make unauthorised use of equipment or materials of the IOA for private purposes.

Loyalty

  • People work together loyally, openly and constructively. Everyone is polite, friendly and committed to helping others. Once a decision is taken, people rally behind it and implement it quickly and efficiently.
  • Managers are approachable and loyal to staff and students – the same is expected vice versa. Managers engage the right people in the right places so that everyone’s capabilities are used to their full potential.
  • Everyone shall refrain from statements and/or actions that could damage or compromise the position or reputation of the IOA.

Collaboration

One always strives for smooth cooperation, with both the IOA and all other parties involved at the centre. The idea is to achieve results as a team. Together, we create a professional working environment and working atmosphere that feels pleasant for everyone. Respect for each other is indispensable.

Culture of openness

Communications

  • People communicate openly and clearly about what is expected of everyone. Managers ensure that the resources needed to achieve certain goals are in place – they also ensure that everyone is evaluated fairly.
  • People discuss disagreements with each other; if necessary, internal/external confidants can be called in. Everyone makes themselves accessible and approachable.
  • It is always possible to report breaches of this code of ethics. In the first instance, one can contact the internal confidential advisers who will handle these reports with discretion and confidentiality.
