About IOA

The International Opera Academy (IOA) is a programme of postgraduate education for classically trained singers and repetitors. The IOA provides a bridge between musical education and the professional opera world.

The IOA was founded in 1999 by theatre and opera director Guy Joosten. He set up the programme to respond to a long-standing need for a postgraduate course for opera singers.

The IOA’s independent structure enables it to quickly and accurately respond to the changing reality of opera, in collaboration with opera house and/or musical theatre companies, cultural organisations and educational institutions.

117 students of more than 35 nationalities have graduated since the school’s beginning. The graduates’ successful careers underline the high quality of the IOA programme.

This up-to-date curriculum exists of two academic years of fulltime, intensive education, preparing students for a professional career in the demanding world of opera & music theatre through technical, musical, theoretical and stage training. Specific attention is paid to contemporary opera and musical theatre repertoire.
