P. Glass — Les Enfants Terribles
Obsession that leads to Tragedy
Les Enfants Terribles by Philip Glass is a gripping and poetic chamber opera in which the obsessive relationship between a brother and sister leads to a tragic end. The hypnotic piano music enhances the intimate atmosphere of this deeply moving work.
Glass based his 1996 opera on Jean Cocteau’s novel of the same name. The story revolves around the teenagers Paul and Lise, who retreat into a Paris apartment after the death of their mother. Their seemingly innocent games gradually spiral into a destructive power struggle that also ensnares others around them. Slowly, brother and sister drive each other toward a tragic climax.
