Mario Maiguel Rey
Mario Maiguel was born and raised in Colombia. He completed his bachelor degree in Piano at the Conservatory of Music of the National University of Colombia with Piedad Pérez. In 2016 he started his Masters in piano performance at the Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten with Nicolas Callot; he also studied with Marta Liebana in 2017. In 2017, he was accepted to join the International Opera Academy for a two-year postgraduate programme.
Mario was awarded several prizes, among which the prize for pianist in the National Singing Contest of the Bogota Philharmonic (May 2016), the Young performers of the Bank of the Republic (2016) and the competition of Young performers of the Caldas Symphony Orchestra (2014). Mario was scholarship holder of the Cartagena International Music Festival in 2014 and 2016.
Mario was apprentice répétiteur in Weimar Lyric Opera Studio during the winter session in 2016 in the production La Cenerentola (Rossini) and was harpsichord player in the performances at the Rudolstadt theater with the Türinger Symphoniker orchestra.
As a trainee répétiteur in the International Opera Academy of Gent, Belgium, Mario has performed in important theaters in Belgium such as Bozar, Kunsthuis Opera Vlaanderen, Miry Hall and Minardschouwburg. He also had the opportunity to be répétiteur in professional productions, such as Les Pêcheurs de Perles (Bizet), Il turco in Italia (Rossini) and played on stage in Petit Pelleas (reduced version of Debussy’s Pélleas et Mélisande).
Mario has participated as celesta player in Vier letzte Lieder (R. Strauss) with the Opera Vlaanderen symphonic orchestra in the Koningin Elisabethzaal in Antwerp, and he was piano secondo and celesta player in the production The medium of Gian Carlo Menotti in the theaters León de Greiff and Jorge Eliecer Gaitán in Bogotá.
