Opera Theory
The IOA teaches students how to communicate intelligently about and within the field of opera, at a professional level. This part of the programme provides students with background knowledge about opera: specific musical analysis, dramaturgy, and insight into opera production. During the second year of the programme, theoretical sessions provide valuable information for the start of the students’ career.

This course aims to prepare students for the professional world at a practical, administrative, legal, online and productional level.

CONTENT
The course ‘Methodology’ consists of a) a lecture series (content: see below) and b) a practical assignment aiding students to develop their organizational and production skills (Christmas concerts in elderly homes).
Practical Assignment (Elien Hanselaer): see Opera Op Bezoek: Christmas Social Concerts. This assignment specifically seeks to develop the student’s entrepreneurial skills and enhance his/her social engagement.
Lecture series
- Introduction to Methodology. This session introduces the overall line of the lecture series. In addition, students are given extensive guidance on the practical assignment (Christmas concerts in elderly homes);
- Intendant’s Perspective (Jan Vandenhouwe). The intendant of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen shares his work experiences, insights and worries, and answers substantive and practical questions regarding the students’ own professional opera career;
- Social Media and Online Personal Branding (Claïs Lemmens). Social media and online personal branding: fundamentals of online marketing, platforms and their parameters, algorithms and growth, interaction and engagement, statistics and analytics, integrated social media campaigns, IOA social media policy;
- Legal Framework (Luc Gulinck); Introduction to royalties.
- Cultuurloket & werkstatuten (Cultuurloket). Cultuurloket offers business support for professionals in the cultural field. This session introduces students to the administrative professional context of the cultural field. Specific attention is paid to work statutes.
