Demons, witches and madness in opera and theatre from the English baroque to the Italian melodrama

The witches in Shakespeare’s Macbeth play an essential role in the psychological evolution of the boundlessly ambitious Scottish warlord to an obsessive serial killer. Giuseppe Verdi, too, considered Shakespeare’s prophetic ‘weird sisters’ as a protagonist in their own right. Students of the International Opera Academy explore theatrical music and opera from the baroque period, in search of dark witches and demons, as well as the madness that they unleash, to the detriment of the doomed opera heroes and heroines. Not to mention the countless inner demons! A richly painted panorama, from Matthew Locke‘s theatre music for Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Purcell‘s Dido and Aeneas to Händel‘s operas and large-scale mad scenes from the Italian belcanto repertoire.
