La Finta Giardiniera - set & costume designer
Ramon B. Ivars is a set and costume designer, director and professor born and based in Barcelona.
He studied Theatre Design at “Institut del Teatre” (1968/72). In 1983, he was awarded the Culture’s Catalan National Prize, in 1985 he designed the set for Peter Brook’s Mahabharata production in Barcelona, in 1992 he was the costume designer for the Opening Ceremony of the Paralimpic Games in Barcelona. In 1997, he was the National Curator of the Spanish Pavilion at the Prague’s Quadrennial of Scenography, repeating that management on 2011. In 2018, Ivars became an Honorary Member of the Spanish Academy of Scenic Arts.
His extensive work – which has included opera, dance, drama, film and TV productions – has always been combined with that of professor and lecturer in Theatre & Architecture Faculties of many cities like Helsinki, Maastricht, London, Prague, Stockholm, Tallinn, Sao Paulo, Madrid, Granada and, of course, Barcelona, where he was the Head of Scenic Design Department at the Institut del Teatre, until 2013.
Most of the opera and ballet creations designed by Ramon B. Ivars have been staged at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona. Further, he has also worked as a designer in Opera Houses of cities such as Berlin, Buenos Aires, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Helsinki, Cologne, Leipzig, Madrid and Stuttgart, with productions such as Anna Bolena, Concerto, Cosí fan tutte, Die Fledermaus, Die Valküre, Don Giovanni, Don Quixote, Giselle, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Il Trovatore, Iris, La bohème, La forza del destino, La traviata, La voix humaine, Laberinto, Le nozze de Figaro, Lucia di Lammermoor, Maria Stuarda, Napoli, Opera Classics, Roberto Devereux, Romeo et Juliette, The magic flute, Un ballo in maschera, Yerma…
